Surreal Artists painted unnerving, illogical scenes, and developed painting techniques that allowed the unconscious to express itself. In this workshop we will attempt the element of surprise, and unexpected juxtapositions in our work. We will do this by using a transparent medium, along with brilliant color to enable a surreal appearance and feel to the overall collage piece. Instruction will be given in formatting a design through background techniques and paper dimensions, textural base material formations, medium application, complementary color combinations, acrylic ink “painting”, juxtaposition of collage materials to format an unusual idea and/or theme.
Date: April 18, 2020
Time: 10:00 - 3:00 p.m.
The object of growing as an artist is to add new ideas and creative avenues to incorporate into your present style. In this class students will find a path to background renderings, combining mediums to achieve movement, and collage application. You will find techniques that can be used in many of your mixed media art forms; collage, journaling, fiber arts & acrylic painting just to name a few. Instruction will be given in textural background application of a surface “skin”, acrylic painting, metallic waxing, highlighting and dimensional shading techniques to establish a 3-D appearance to your work, material attachments, and collage design.

At times I complete a painting and can feel my emotions echoing onto the page. This is the effect I achieved creating this techniques/project workshop. You will love the textural changes in color and tone, and feel of each antique paper you’ll transform, echoing your own emotions onto the page. You’ll experiment and play with paints, mediums, collage, color theory, blending, shading & highlights, and basic composition. You will use these sheets as a background to your larger art canvas/substrate pieces, in journals or as framed art. You will complete 3 or more pages during class.
